At Mars Theory, we believe in transparency, data privacy, and a quiet, distraction-free digital experience. We do not sell, rent, trade, or monetize your personal information, and we never will.
Below are some things you can see, change, or delete, and how to do so.
On Our Website
What marstheory.org does and doesn’t do:
- No cookies. Our website doesn’t put cookies in your browser.
- Font choice. If you switch on the OpenDyslexic font, your browser remembers that on your device. It never reaches us. Switch it off with the same button, or clear this site’s data in your browser.
- No ads, and nobody else’s tracking. We don’t run ads, and we don’t let anyone else put ads or tracking on our pages.
- Counting visits. We do use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they read. It uses no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. Cloudflare says it doesn’t fingerprint visitors, doesn’t store internet (IP) addresses and doesn’t use this for ads. We see only totals, for up to 6 months.
- Server logs. Our web host, Pressable, keeps standard logs (internet address, browser type, pages requested and when) to run and protect the site.
- Communication. Our website is for adults and teens. If a child under 13 writes to us, we reply once (or to their parent) and then delete the child’s email address.
What you can do:
- Messages and sign-ups. What you send through our contact form or by email (including a request to join as a beta tester) is kept for up to 2 years (or longer, only if we’re still helping you). Email us to delete it sooner.
- Thanks to supporters. If you support Mars Theory and would rather not be thanked by name, add a note with your payment, or email us to take your name down. Payment records themselves are kept for 7 years, for taxes and accounting.
- Read More videos. If you sent us a video, email us any time to take it down, and we’ll remove it from the places we control.
In Lanternway
What you can do:
- Use it without an account. Your reading then stays on that one device, and we receive none of it, not even to store a backup.
- See your data. Your books, reading, badges, and settings are all in the app. Email us for a full copy, including survey answers and account records.
- Change reading logs. Reading from today or yesterday can be edited; older reading can be shortened or deleted. Delete any book at any time. Email us to correct anything else, such as your age group.
- Erase your reading but keep your account. Do this in Settings > Help > Privacy > Erase all reading data.
- Delete your account. Do this in Settings > Account > Delete my account. This removes your account and everything in it from our live systems right away. Copies in our backups are gone within 7 days.
- Sign out of your account. This removes your data from that device. Lanternway backs it up to your account first, and tells you if it can’t.
- Programs and campaigns. Leave any library, church, or other organization’s program in Settings > Account > Programs. Your reading, badges, and tokens stay. Organizations only ever see totals for groups of 10 or more readers.
- Surveys. The two short reading surveys are optional and can be skipped.
- Readiness check. Your answers never leave your device. This check can be skipped.
- Notifications. A notification that gently warns you when the reading timer pauses is ‘off’ unless you turn it ‘on’ in Settings > Reading.
For Parents
- See, change, or remove your child’s profile. Do this in Settings > Account > Family. Removing your child’s profile deletes everything associated with that profile only.
- Change your mind about the parent notice. Email us to stop collecting your child’s information and delete it, without losing your own account.
- The grown-up PIN. The PIN keeps children out of grown-ups’ profiles on a shared device, and keeps one family’s children out of another family’s profiles when two families sign in on the same device. Set a PIN in Settings > Account > Family.
In Plainword
What you can do:
- Use it without an account. Plainword has no account. What you save in the app stays on your device, and we never receive it, not even to store a backup.
- Delete your saves. Tap a verse to remove its highlight, note, or bookmark, remove saved words and passages from the Saved tab, or erase everything in Settings > Help & more > Start over. Removing the app, or clearing this site’s data in your browser, deletes it too.
- Keep a copy. Go to Saved > Send my notes to get your notes, highlights, bookmarks, prayer list, and journal as plain text. (This feature is part of Plainword Plus, free while we beta test the app.)
- Reminders. Any reminders you set are ‘off’ unless you turn one ‘on’ in Prayer and Passages on the Pray tab.
- Open in Logos is off unless you turn it on in Settings > Bible. If you tap it, Logos sees which verse you opened.
- Reading aloud. This feature uses your device’s or browser’s built-in voice. Some browsers’ voices work online and are run by the browser’s maker.
In A Week at Pinemoor
What you can do:
- Use it without an account. The game has no account, there’s nothing to sign up for, and we don’t receive anything from your play.
- Delete your settings. The game remembers your settings, like larger text, only in your browser. Clearing this site’s data in your browser deletes them.
Ask Us
Email hello@marstheory.org to get a copy of your Lanternway information, correct it, or delete it. To protect your information, we only answer requests sent from the email address on the account. Please note that what you save in Plainword and A Week at Pinemoor never reaches us, so there’s nothing of it for us to look up.
Read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for a complete overview of what data we collect, how we collect it, and how that data is used.
